76 people arrested for homosexuality over three years: police

MALE, Nov 12 (HNS) – Some 76 people have been arrested for homosexuality over the past three years, police said. The recent arrest of local film actor Ibrahim Giyaas (Dhaas) and cross dresser tailor Mohamed Haneef is a high profile case in question. Over the past three years, cases involving homosexuality increased, along with the number of people involved in them, police said. During that period, some 36 cases were filed, involving 65 men and 11 women. In 2000, 15 cases were filed involving 27 people, while last year, 16 cases were filed involving 37 people. Actor Dhaas arrested along with crossdressing male friend

MALE, Oct 31 (HNS) - Local actor Ibrahim Giyas (Dhaas) was arrested Wednesday along with a crossdressing male friend, police said. Dhaas and Mohamed Haneef, who likes to dress as a woman, was arrested around midnight Wednesday. "Yes, they both are in our custody. They were found together in a room," Assistant Commissioner of Police, Major Ibrahim Latheef told Haveeru Thursday without giving details. Dhaas is an emerging actor who has appeared in a string of music videos; he has also appeared in some local films. Haneef, who is nicknamed "Honey" by friends, is a local tailor famous for sewing women's clothes. There were rumors even before that Dhaas and Haneef enjoy some kind of a "relationship."
