I am not shocked. These things happen all over the Maldives all the time. Goats, chickens and rays continuously become subject to sexual violence, yet what is shocking to me is that, reading through the comments on the Minivan News item, it is obvious that Maldivians still are living in denial – one commentator, probably a Wahhabi, said that “Liberal Democracy” is to blame. Perhaps he is not aware that if only true Liberal Democracy came, it is the only solution that can address the root cause of all these violence in Maldives society: REPRESSION OF INDIVIDUALITY.
However angry all the Kasauti Wahhabis are going to get with me, I’m still going to say it and I’ll keep on saying it: as one commentator to Minivan News wrote, the answer is “i guess being a sexually repressed state forces people to go crazy”.
Very true.
As I’ve said before and will never tire of repeating, this Kasauti Maldivian society has repressed every aspect of individualism and forces all of us to conform to a certain single set standard code of behavior because their religious beliefs had brainwashed them that all humans are not only equal but also the same like robots!
In a way, the robot comment is applicable when it comes to the Kasauti faction of the Maldives’ society: these people work according to the religious “chips” inserted into their unthinking and uncritical minds by their favorite sheikhs like Ali Rameez, Fareed, Ilyas etc. So, it is sad that 2.5 billion years of Evolution resulted in the emergence of an intelligent species (human beings) that is ironically proving to be, um, infinitely stupid.
You are not free to have individual beliefs or views or sexualities or characteristics and therefore, as long as you remain in this fucking land called Maldives, you have to repress your individuality, and this repression of your very basic personal needs misfires into violent action of not only the sexual type but the very anti-social types such as gangsterism. Almost all the gangsters I personally know have issues to do with either their belief or sexuality.
By coincidence, just today I met an uncle of one of my gangsta buddies and he told me: “Hilath, it is so sad. He is still into it (heroin). We have given him every happiness we could think of. Even recently we bought a motorcycle for him. We don’t know what else to do.”
Being the Kasauti type living in denial, what could I really tell this uncle? Can he ever even begin to understand the highly individualistic personal issues affecting this particular gangster friend of mine? The difficulties my friend has in believing there is a personal God… the difficulties he is having with his sexuality because he told me he was “deeply troubled” to find that “some men” are “sexually attractive to him.” You can build a palace for him, give him a Ferrari to ride and even hand over the Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole to fuck, yet he is never going to be happy and there is nobody in this Kasauti society to listen to his real needs except for a few “freaky” individuals like me!
While other Islamic states allow people of other beliefs, sexualities and individualities to exist by side because Islam does not force anyone to accept it by force, these crazy humans called Maldivians have twisted God’s laws to suit their own political ends and changed our Constitution and now does not allow any Maldivian citizen to have his/her individuality realized.
As one of my friends today told me, Nature can never create two humans alike, and therefore, when it comes to specific issues like sexuality itself, we could categorize people as hetero, bi, gay or LGBT but the truth is people’s nature are very individual. For example, there are men who get aroused at the sight of male genitalia while watching hetero porn but interestingly never act on it. What do we call these men? Gay, bi or what? It is difficult because they don’t fall into any known categories of sexualities as categorized by English language by the West! In India itself, there are so many genders and sexualities the Westerner is baffled because he can’t name and categorize them. Hence, you can really never categorize such individuals as even gay or bisexual because the truth is, we don’t really know what they are.
This is where all organized religions have lost their relevance because they are unscientific and every advice they offered you from hundreds of years ago do not take Natural or scientific realities into consideration and therefore fails utterly to really solve any human problems on any level. Rather, rather than giving space for individuals to vent out their individualities in appropriate moral and ethical fashion, they repress and further narrow our life’s paths and the result? Religion only acts to further aggravate all human problems and the repression reaches a point where people act out violently – against the women, children, animals or anything that is under their power. But ask your average Kasauti Maldivian and she will deny that things like homosexuality exists in Nature. “How can God create something like that!” they will say in bafflement.
Yes, how can God create anomalies like homosexuality and atheistic views? Unless… unless there is an alternate answer… but their minds are shut. They deliberately shut their minds because of their own insecurities. These people lack intelligence, self-esteem and confidence and want a Higher Power to always nanny them and take care of them.
You can set up numerous science societies in Maldives but I doubt it will awaken the Kasauti segment of the Maldivian society. Just a few days before my family made it unbearable for me to live at home and I was psychologically pressured to move out, I asked a female relative of mine who is very bright in Physics, this question: “You know about the large hadron collider and how particles come out of nothing. You have read all about the physical evidence available now that this Universe emerged out of nothing simply because Positive and Negative Energy exist, though we don’t know why they exist and can only settle for an ‘answer’ like ‘Laws of Nature’, whatever that means. And you have read all the evidence for Evolution and agree that there is only geometry in the structure of the Universe and no intelligent force driving it. Yet, why do you believe in God?”
Her reply simply was: “Well, there are many things we don’t know yet. So I just accept that there is a God.”
So, whenever there is a gap in information and there are no definite answers available, for these unthinking Kasauti Maldivians, by default it must be God!
What kind of logic is that? Beats me.
But this is the point I actually want to come to: my point in asking her that question was to demonstrate to her that there is currently no 100 percent foolproof evidence that there is a God and therefore there is no reason why we should treat one religion as superior to another.
Which is why Democracy came about – recognizing the fact that people believe in all kinds of shit because all the relevant information is not available right now, and there is no way to prove that one person’s belief is wrong while the other person’s belief is right.
But this is also where this relative – and the larger Kasauti Maldivian society – keeps baffling me: all my Kasauti Maldivian friends know that they accept Islam purely on blind faith and therefore there is no reason why they should accept their family members or other Maldivians to accept Islam at face value.
So my main argument is, Islam may be right, but who knows right now? Everybody I know who claims to believe in Islam only does purely on blind faith, so why don’t you allow your neighbor to live his individual life? But at this point, your average Kasauti Maldivian will say: “But then if we allow multi-religions into our homogeneous society, it will create religious strife like in Karachi.”
Religious strife takes place only when people chose to become violent. Just because your neighbor is an atheist or Christian or gay, why should you go and kill him? What business of yours is it? You already know that you also accept Islam on purely blind faith and not 100 percent scientific or even logical evidence. So why should you slaughter your neighbor just because he feels that Islam is not the right religion? As Matthew Perry’s irreligious character tells his religious ex-wife character in the now discontinued TV series “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”, why should it bother a heterosexual couple that a gay couple lives in their neighborhood? Is there anything for the heterosexual couple to lose just because somebody else practices gay sex within their bedrooms causing harm to no one else?
Perhaps, as Foucault pointed out, it all boils down to power relations among humans which have existed from the beginning. The moment we try to name something, define it and categorize it, we enslave it to the existing order catering to a largely religious, patriarchal and heterosexual society. So, for me, “marriage” is just a word these religious heteros coined for their convenience and is nothing more than a government “license” for an adult man and adult woman to have sex and bear children. Perhaps gays should recognize that it is their hetero “rivals” who deliberately gave “an air of religiousness” to the word “marriage” and therefore, if they are still unhappy with the word “civil union”, then invent a word to rival “marriage” that will have more “religious associations” – perhaps a Gatch Made in Heaven?
For me, things like gender, sex, and sexualities in Nature are too complex to label and define. Some people I know categorize me as “gay” but that is not necessarily how I personally feel: I feel I am too complex to fit any certain single category and although I am not going to be explicit here publicly about my sexual desires, let’s just say that I am just another healthy individual who, by Nature, happens to have a good sexual appetite.
In conclusion, I will say this over and over again, unless this Kasauti society is ready to address the root cause of all these anti-social violent acts happening to not only women and children but animals too, we will keep on reading these shocking stories. The ONLY way to give the much needed relief to this highly repressed society is to address the root cause of the problem by Constitutionally giving the people their individuality: freedom of belief (religion) and sexuality. We can keep on talking meaninglessly about only the symptoms of violence and watch a 4,000-year-old civilization called Maldives dragging itself down into the dustbins of history.
