Is Islam the Cause of Paedohpilia in Maldives?
Letter on Paedophilia
Following the recent bust up of a peadophilia ring by the police, Haveeru's take on the issue has alarmingly transended from paedophelia to gay sex and finally to lesbianism.
Last night's Haveeru editorial said there was not only gay hanky panky that was going on in this country but women were actually doing it with other women and nobody sees this as a problem. I think there is a tinge of some fetish pervertism in these writers.
I think its about time Maldivian society learnt the difference between paedophilia and homosexuality between consenting adults. And I think the police also should understand the difference.
If the police intend to prosecute/persecute all gay people for sexual misconduct they should also go after all the hetrosexual casual sex going around the parks and waterfronts of Male' at night. Both are forbidden by the law.

Police Arrest Two Men Who Sexually Abused Several Young Boys
The two men are Moosa Ismail, 40, and Ahmed Ibrahim, 33 and Police said that the two had been arrested in two separate cases. Last month Police had captured another pedophile, Hussain Fazeel, 38, who had had sexual relationships with a large number of young boys and had kept an extensive digital video and photo collection of his activities.
Speaking at a news conference held at the Police Headquarters last Thursday, the In-Charge of the Serious and Organized Crimes Unit, Inspector Hassan Habeeb said that they had been led to Moosa Ismail while investigating Hussain Fazeel’s case. He said that Moosa Ismail, who runs a ‘gaadiya’ (cart) business on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, had enticed young boys to him by giving them money, mobile phones and other kinds of gifts. In addition, Moosa would even take them to hotels for meals and built a close relationship with them, Police said.
Habeeb also said that in addition to the two pedophiles, Moosa and Fazeel, Police had also taken into custody six other men who were over 18 years old for questioning. He said that they were getting a lot of information about other pedophiles from the kids who were arrested for having homosexual relationships.
Some of Moosa’s victims had also been sexually abused by Fazeel, Habeeb said, but admitted that there didn’t seem to be any direct connection between Fazeel and Moosa. Police said that Moosa, who is a married man, had preyed on school children too.
Habeeb further said that so far they had detained 13 people in connection to the two homosexuality cases. Two kids, under 14 years of age, had been questioned before being released, he said.
“We are currently looking for 20 other people believed to be connected to these cases,” Habeeb said.
Police said that the Health Ministry’s Gender and Family Protection Services were taking care of the children who had been taken into Police custody in connection to the cases.
In addition, the Head of the Police’s Child and Family Protection Unit, Sub Inspector Mirufath Faiz said that when Ahmed Ibrahim, from Lhaviyani atoll Naifaru, had been arrested at his house the two boys that were living with him had been there. Mirufath further said that Police records showed that Ahmed Ibrahim had been arrested on several occasions for having homosexual relationships.
Ahmed had been arrested in 2002 on charges of having sexual relationships with a 17-year-old boy. He was arrested again in 2004 for having sex with a 13-year-old boy. When he was arrested again on similar charges in 2007, he was already serving a three-year banishment sentence given in April 2006 for having sex with a 13-year-old boy. Mirufath said that the Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation (DPRS) had notified them that Ahmed Ibrahim had fled to Malé to escape the banishment sentence and had been in hiding since then. He further said that Ahmed Ibrahim had been keeping the two kids, one 14 years old and the other 17, after lying to their parents that they were working for him. The two children had suffered extensive injuries due to the sexual abuse and were now undergoing treatment, Mirufath said.
“He had brought the 14-year-old to Malé and told his parents that he was working for a German couple,” Mirufath said. “He promised the parents they would get $15 a day. The 17-year-old had been looking for a job when Ahmed brought him over promising to give $600 per month. He also said that the boy would have to go on safaris and fishing trips with tourists.”
Mirufath said that the 17-year-old had tried to escape from Ahmed several times but that Ahmed had blackmailed the boy by saying that he was “pregnant with the boy’s child”.
“Our investigation has revealed that the boy’s parents are now divorced,” Mirufath said. “Ahmed had used that to confuse the boy further by saying that the boy would face great suffering because of the divorce.”
Police have now handed over the two boys to their parents.
Police are now investigating the possibility that there was another child involved in the case.

Police Arrests Paedophile For Sexual Abuse of Large Number of Children
Briefing reporters on Thursday Head of Serious and Organized Crime Unit, Inspector of Police Hassan Habeeb said that Moosa Ismail was arrested following substantial evidences obtained from the investigation of paedophile Hussein Fazeel (38 years old) on the 11th of January 2009.
Hussein Fazeel was arrested for child porn activities and for storing phonographic pictures of child porn taken with his child victims.
Police arrested Moosa Ismail on suspicion of homosexual activities on the 19th of February. Police also detained six under aged children for investigations along with another 5 adults. Since the children involved suffered from mental and psychological torments, they are being treated with the help of officials from the Department of Gender and Family Protection Services. Inspector of Police Hassan Habeeb said the involved children and their parents are cooperating with the police and providing immense help in the investigations.
Investigations conducted up to now have confirmed that Moosa Ismail operated a cart run business on Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu. Moosa Ismail lures children to his web by providing them with presents, money and food from hotels. He establishes a close relationship with the boys through such behavior to bring them to his room.
In addition to the boys mentioned above, police are also searching for other boys involved in such cases.
Moosa Ismail, the paedophile, involved in the case is a married person.
