Sexual molestation cases increase by 60 percent during this Ramadan

by Abdulla Haseen

The number of sexual molestation cases during the first half of this Ramadan increased by 60 percent compared to the first 15 days of last Ramadan, police said.

Police said that most cases involved sexual molestation of children and called on parents to be vigilant.

Police also said that the increase might be a result of a rise in public awareness and therefore an increase in the reporting of such cases.

Police said children have to be specially protected because the physical and psychological damages from sexual abuse can be long-lasting.

Police said that parents had the major role to play because they would be spending the most time with their children and therefore able to detect the changes that surface in their character.

Police said that there are many protective measures parents and guardians can take including making children aware in a way that is appropriate to their age. Children should be told that it is not their fault if a person touches them and encouraged to report to parents if people touch them, instilling in them a sense that their body belongs to themselves and that nobody else should violate it.
